Anna Kalinich

Anna M. Kalinich passed peacefully on Saturday, October 9, 2021, at Marywood Heights Nursing Center where she had been a resident since December 2020. Prior to moving to Marywood Heights, Anna had resided at Mulberry Towers, Scranton. Born in Scranton on May 3, 1932, she is the daughter of the late John and Agnes Linko Kalinich. She attended Scranton Public Schools and graduated in 1951 from West Scranton High School, where she excelled in art, completing many drawings and paintings. She pursued additional course work at LaSalle College. She had been employed by Consolidated Molded Products and retired from GSGS & B Architects. Anna was a member of St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Scranton, but when she became homebound, she treasured the frequent services conducted at Mulberry Towers by Deacon Ed Shoener from St. Peter’s Cathedral as well as the Daily Mass televised from St. Peter’s. She was a lifelong member of the Greek Catholic Union. An accomplished seamstress, she took pleasure in designing and making dresses and outfits for her nieces when they were young. She enjoyed traveling to the Jersey shore, New York City, Washington, D.C., Hawaii, Bermuda and Canada, as well as cruising to Caribbean Islands. Her favorite pastimes included attending Broadway plays, Broadway Theatre League performances and the NEPA Philharmonic. She was an avid reader of historical fiction and books on all aspects of Scranton’s history. She was predeceased by her brother, John J. Kalinich, sisters; Leona Kalinich, Agnes Rodey and Marie Slovenkai; sister inlaw, Mary Lou Kalinich, and brothers inlaw; Harold Rodey, Frank Slovenkai Sr., and Michael Onufrak. She leaves behind one sister, Margaret Onufrak, Bloomfield, NJ. She is also survived by her caregivers; nieces, Kathy Ford and Elizabeth Slovenkai and nephew, Michael Slovenkai Sr., as well as several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Anna’s family extends its sincerest appreciation to Sr. Kieran, I.H.M. Chaplain at Marywood Heights and to the staffs at Marywood Heights and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their kind and compassionate care of Anna. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Anna’s memory, to the donor’s charity or that quiet acts of kindness be performed. The family requests that all those attending the viewing and/or the Mass, wear face masks and observe social distancing. Viewing for family and friends will be on Friday, 4 to 7 pm, in the Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 262 Railroad Avenue, West Scranton. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 9 am by Msgr. Dale R. Rupert, Pastor of St. Peter’s Cathedral. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Cemetery, Minooka.

Viewing for family and friends will be on Friday, 4 to 7 pm
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 9 am by Msgr. Dale R. Rupert, Pastor of St. Peter’s Cathedral.
Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Cemetery, Minooka.

The family requests that all those attending the viewing and/or the Mass, wear face masks and observe social distancing.
