Edward J. Scanlan

Edward J. Scanlan, 92, of Scranton died peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, with his loved ones at his side.  Eddie was the husband of Marianne Newton Scanlan with whom he shared 63 years of marriage before her passing on October 24, 2023.

Born in Scranton, Pa., Eddie was the son of the late John “Jack” and Margaret Clarke Scanlan.  He was a graduate of St. Paul Catholic High School. After graduation, he joined the United States Army and served in the Korean War. In his younger days, Eddie was employed as a Scranton Police Officer and worked in hospitality at Howard Johnson’s. He retired from the United States Postal Service after 30 years as a mail superintendent.

Eddie was dedicated to his Catholic faith and was a member of St Paul’s Roman Catholic Church. He was a loving and dependable man who always had a funny story to tell. His quick wit and humor will never be forgotten.

Eddie is survived by his four daughters, Molly Sardella and her husband Renny, Louise McCormack and her husband Brian, Melissa Kaufman and her husband Brian, Kate Verica and her husband William, nine grandchildren, Sara, Katie, Emily, Edward, Mae, Brian, Maria, Will, and Tommy, sister in laws, Nancy Crossin Scanlan, Noel Kuschke, Connie Newton, and Karen Von Kunes Newton; many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, Marianne, Eddie was predeceased by his brothers, John Scanlan, Paul Scanlan, sisters, Alice Hinton, June Quinn, Jeanette Boyce, Kathleen Harrison, Louise Grunstein, Nancy Scanlan.

With heartfelt gratitude and appreciation, the family would like to thank Eddie’s loving caretakers, Nadine Covington and Jacquana Thomas for the kindness and care they provided to Eddie.

The family will receive friends from 9 to 10 am this Thursday, September 26th at St. Paul’s Church. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am by Monsignor Joseph G. Quinn, nephew of  Edward Scanlan, Monsignor Neil Van Loon at St. Paul’s Church, 1510 Penn Avenue, Scranton, PA.  Interment will follow with Military Honors at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Arrangements under the care and direction of the Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services, West Scranton
