Elizabeth “Betty” Markanich, 88, of the Pine Brook section of Scranton, died Friday at Geisinger/CMC. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late George Sr. and Anna Kozak Markanich. A 1944 graduate of Scranton Technical High School, she received her Business Degree from Lackawanna Business School. Betty was a lifelong member of St. John’s Byzantine Catholic Church and retired as an account technician at Tobyhanna Army Depot. She was a member of the National Association of Federal Employees, and had been a volunteer at Moses-Taylor Hospital and was a former member of the Century Club, Elite Club, the Tribune Classic Bowling League, the Taurus Club. She was always available to assist in any of the church fund raising events. She is survived by one sister, Theresa Williams, Scranton, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, to include Brian Yachera and fiancée Nicole Matthews who were her caregivers. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, George Markanich Jr. and infant John, four sisters Jule Markanich, Helen Bitsko, Margaret Kruttel and Ann Gello. The funeral will be on Tuesday at 10:15 am from the Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 262 Railroad Avenue, Scranton, with a Funeral Divine Liturgy to be celebrated by the Rev. Leonard A. Martin, S.J., on Tuesday at 11 am in St. John’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Broadway Street at Fourth Avenue, Scranton. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Viewing for family and friends will be on Monday, 5 to 8 pm with Parastas Services at 7:30 pm.
