Helen D. Sporko, 95, of West Scranton, passed on Monday at St. Mary’s Villa and Rehab Center. Her husband is Edward P. Sporko and the couple recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Born in Scranton, she is the daughter of the late Valentine and Michalina Zera. Helen was educated in Scranton schools, was a member of SS Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church, West Locust Street, Scranton and had worked for the former Capitol Records and retired from Haddon Craftsmen.

She was a loving, giving, creative and hard working, wife, mother and grandmother who was totally dedicated to her faith, husband and family.  She met adversity head on with a positive attitude and humor, despite numerous physical and communication problems due to a stroke she suffered 25 years ago.  She was always pleasant, never complained and had a smile that lit up the room.  Prior to her stroke she was always busy making clothes, quilts, afghans, decorations and even unique themed birthday cakes for her family, and loved going to flee markets and traveling.  Her attitude, strength and perseverance in dealing with life’s challenges has, and continues to be, an inspiration for her family and all who knew her.

Along with her husband Edward, she is also survived by a son, Raymond Sporko and wife Deborah, Moscow, two daughters; Diane Slater and husband James, Dickson City, Janet O’Rourke, Scranton, six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one sister, Ceil Shugdinis, Michigan, nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her son David and seven siblings. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, at 11 am at SS Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church, by the Rev. Fr. Sam J. Ferretti, Pastor. Interment will follow at the parish cemetery. There are no calling hours. Arrangements have been entrusted to the direction and care of the Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 262 Railroad Avenue, West Scranton.
