ARMY SPC Ruben Rodriguez, 22, of Olyphant, formerly of Allentown passed on January 16, 2025, while attending initial entry training at Fort Sill Oklahoma. Born in Allentown to Elvis and Mirella Vazquez Rodriguez of Olyphant, PA, Ruben was a proud 2022 graduate of Mid Valley High School, where he also earned his CDL Class A license. As an 88M Motor Transport Operator in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, Ruben exemplified dedication and service to his country. He was also a member of the Revival Baptist Church in the Providence section of Scranton. Known affectionately as “Smiley” for his constant cheerful demeanor and infectious smile, he brought joy to everyone around him. Ruben was a guiding light and mentor to special needs students at Mid Valley, always eager to help in any way he could. His unwavering faith in Jesus Christ was a cornerstone of his life, and he was vocal in sharing his love for the Lord. From a young age, Ruben played little league baseball for Dickson City, demonstrating his love for teamwork and sports. He treasured moments spent with his cousins, enjoyed going to the gym, and had a particular fondness for Crumble Cookies. As a loving uncle, Ruben was everything to his nephew Jadis, and he was a devoted son and proud mama’s boy. His legacy of love, service, and unwavering positivity will forever remain in our hearts.
Ruben is survived by his parents, Elvis and Mirella Vazquez Rodriguez; his two sisters, Derien Perez and Noelia Rodriguez; his two brothers, Eric Rodriguez and Wilson Perez; his two nephews, Jadis and Ezrah; and his beloved chihuahua, Oreo. His warmth, generosity, and joyful spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday at 11 am, officiated by the Rev. Randall Bloem, in the Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 262 Railroad Avenue, West Scranton. Interment will follow at Cathedral Cemetery, 1708 Oram Street, Scranton, PA 18504 with full military honors accorded. Calling hours for family and friends will be on Tuesday, 4 to 7 pm with a prayer service at 6:30 pm and on Wednesday from 10 am until time of service at 11 am.
