Betty J. Skorec, 78, of West Scranton, passed into Eternal Life on Friday at Geisinger/CMC surrounded by her loving sons.. Her husband of 47 years, Joseph Skorec Sr., died July 10, 2002. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Brown Gillespie. Educated in Scranton schools, she had worked as a seamstress in the local garment industry and was a union steward for several local garment factories. Betty was an avid camper at KOA, Tunkhannock for many years, a member of the ILGWU, St. Patrick’s Bowling League and affiliated with the West Side Falcons where she was also the Falcons original mascot. Betty was an active member and deacon of the Dunmore Presbyterian Church and also enjoyed her neighbors, her front porch, her garden and her furry friends. She is survived by four sons, Joseph, Moscow, John, Scranton, Jeffrey Stephen, Scranton, and James, Scranton. Three grandchildren, David James Skorec, Jon Smerecky, Camryn Addison Skorec, brother inlaw and wife, John and Joyce Skorec, Clarks Summit, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Joseph Skorec III, James Skorec, one sister, Robertina Motion, two brothers, James Gillespie Jr. and Thomas Gillespie. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, at 10 am in the Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 262 Railroad Avenue, West Scranton, conducted by Pastor Kenneth H. Forbes, Interment will follow in Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst. Viewing for family and friends will be on Wednesday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 and one hour before services begin on Thursday.
