Stephen “Sonny” Stafursky Jr., 80, of the Tripp Park section of Scranton, passed away peacefully on Thursday at home after an illness. His wife of 53 years is Patricia Scochin Stafursky. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Stephen and Mary Buckla Stafursky. Stephen was a 1955 graduate of Throop High School, a lifetime member of All Saints Orthodox Church, Olyphant and a member of the church council, a United States Army Veteran and had been employed by Joe’s Carburetor Service in Scranton and for Sears Automotive Center when it opened at the Viewmont Mall where he retired as a Service Advisor. Stephen was a Boy Scout Leader at Troop 4 of the Jackson Street Baptist Church in West Scranton and was very proud of his two sons achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a Life Member of AMVETS post 270, a Voting member of the American Ukrainian Veterans Assoc. He was an avid fisherman, an extreme fan of the Boston Red Sox, the Boston Celtics and bowled in the Thursday night misfits league at Idle Hour Bowling Lanes. He was a loving, caring and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. The joys of his life were enjoying his trips to the casino with his wife, his annual trip to the Jersey Shore, raising his two sons and the blessing of watching his grandchildren grow up through the years. He is also survived by two sons, Kenneth, at home, and Danny and wife Susan, Athens. Three grandchildren, Samantha, Stephanie, and Zachary, a great grandchild, Remington. One brother, John Stafursky and wife Sandra, Old Forge, four sisters, Eleanor Sovyrda and husband Ted, Wilkes-Barre, Ann Schlasta and husband Joe, Throop, Janet Baigis and husband Joe, and Sonia Prestys and husband Michael, both of Tompkinsville , brother in-law Basil Holowach, Sparta, NJ, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his sister, Jeanne Holowach and brother in-law John Naughton, two nephews, Gregory Holowach and Timothy Naughton. The Stafursky family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to the Doctors, Nurses and staff of Moses-Taylor Hospital for their compassionate care through the years along with thanks to Dr. Joseph Soliman, Dr. Robert Kaville, Dr. Daniel Brown and Dr. Samir Pancholy. Also a special thanks to the nurses and staff of Ascera Care Hospice for their outstanding care and compassion. Calling hours will be on Wednesday, May 9th, 4 to 8 pm, in the Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 262 Railroad Avenue, West Scranton. Parastas will be served at 7:30 pm and transferal of the body to All Saints Orthodox Church will take place following the viewing. All those attending the Funeral Requiem Service, celebrated by the Very Rev. Daniel Geeza on Thursday at 10 am in All Saints Orthodox Church, Olyphant, are asked to go directly to the church. Burial with full Military Honors provided by the AMVETS Honor Guard will follow in All Saints Orthodox Cemetery, Peckville.
