Eugene J. McCarthy, 90, formerly of Clarks Summit, passed away on Thursday, November 7, 2024, at Allied Hospice Center. Born and raised in Scranton, he was the son of the late Eugene Sr. and Marion Bartle McCarthy. Eugene was a graduate of the former Scranton Central High School and a member of St. Ann’s Basilica Parish. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he later enjoyed a long career as a sales agent for the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.
Gene was rarely seen without a cigar in hand, one of his favorite indulgences. His appreciation for a good cigar became a familiar part of his daily routine, a ritual he enjoyed for many years. Though he lived a long life, age never dulled his sharp mind. Every morning, he would sit down with the newspaper and read it thoroughly from front to back, keeping up with current events of the world around him. Alongside this ritual was his daily crossword puzzle, which he approached with the same dedication. Rarely did a day go by without him finishing the puzzle, even as he approached 90 years old. For Gene, these small, meaningful routines were essential to his day.
He is survived by his sisters, his devoted caregiver Carol O’Connor of Taylor, and Judy Battle and her husband, James, of Scranton; his brother-in-law, Bill Mark; as well as several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. Eugene was preceded in death by his brother, John McCarthy; his sister, Nancy Mark; his brother-in-law, Frank O’Connor; and his sister-in-law, June McCarthy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Basilica of St. Ann. Inurnment with Military Honors will follow at Cathedral Cemetery.
