William H. “Whitey” Dailey, 87, of Jessup, passed Tuesday evening at home with his wife of 67 years, Marion J. Dailey and his two daughters, Paula and Lois, at his side. Bill was born in Scranton to the late Ace LeRoy and Florence Hughes Dailey. Bill was a 1955 graduate of West Scranton High School and graduated with a BS in Engineering from Rutgers University. In his career, he had been employed at Bell Telephone, AT&T and RCA’s Corporate Staff while the family was living in Edgewater Park NJ. In 1977, Bill and his family returned to the Scranton area where he worked at Dailey Resources with his brother, Tom. In Scranton, Bill was an active member of the Jaycees, on the Board of the Regional Tissue Bank and a member of Scranton Country Club. Bill was also a member of Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church in Olyphant.
Bill was an avid Philadelphia sports fan, a CNN and MSNBC devotee, and a voracious reader. He had to be one of the only people who would daily read the Philadelphia Inquirer, cover to cover and article by article. He had a steel-trap memory and was always the one our family would go to when looking for some historical, sports or political information. Bill’s biggest joy, however, was spending time with his four grandchildren, from making up stories to tell them while they sat in his lap as youngsters to talking to them about their school, sports, or professional endeavors as they got older. His relationship with each of them was deeply personal and his devotion to his wife and two daughters was inspirational to his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Marion, their daughters; Paula Dunne and husband Robert J. III, Naples, FL & Ocean City, NJ, Lois Hubshman, Scranton, four grandchildren, Christina Perry & husband Ryan, Robert J. Dunne IV & wife Hana, Gerald Hubshman Jr. & wife Beth, Nicole Dunne & fiancee, Micha’l Breslin, a great granddaughter, Maddox Hubshman, a brother, Thomas Dailey, Scranton, a sister, Peggy Voytek & husband Stephen, Dunmore, nieces & nephews. He was also predeceased by four siblings, Barbara, Robert, Lois Jean & Roy.
Services will be held at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, 200 Delaware Avenue Olyphant PA 18447 with Mass at 1 pm, on Saturday, January 25. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until time of Mass at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 30 E.D. Preate Drive, Suite 108, Moosic, Pa. Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services, West Scranton.
