Barbara Galenas

Barbara Anne Galenas, 91 of Avoca, passed away early Friday morning, January 11, 2019 at home with her loving daughters at her side. Born in Avoca on September 11, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Gacek Vermac. Barbara graduated from Avoca High School and was employed as a bookkeeper in the  garment industry. She was a member of SS Peter & Paul Church and its Altar and Rosary Society, Avoca, and later Nativity of Our Lord Parish, Duryea. Her husband Vincent preceded her in death as did her nine siblings: Anna Smigelski, Estelle Vermac, Elizabeth Wiermak, Joseph Market, Victoria Wanielista, Mary Bernarsky and Casimir, Paul and John Vermac. Barbara loved to dance, sing, bowl, play piano, plan parties and work in her garden. She was an avid reader, prolific letter writer and champion puzzle solver until Alzheimers disease robbed her of all these pastimes. A devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and GG, she met adversity with faith, strength and grace. She was known for her smile and giggle. She is survived by three daughters; Andrea and husband, Circuit Court Judge, John P. Davey, University Park, MD, Judy and husband Jerry Pronko, Clarks Summit, her primary care giver, daughter Mary Beth Galenas at home and companion, Jake Tweedle of Mountaintop. Three granddaughters: Megan and husband Tony Limarzi, Kate Davey and husband Ciro Pepe and Ellen and husband Leslie Walter. Five great grandchildren: Lorenzo, Luca and Lucia Limarzi, Jay and Blaire Walter, and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces great nephews, and close friends, including Melva Cooley of Fowler, Indiana. The family gives special thanks to Dr. Martin Moran, caregivers Jeanine and Judy and Monsignor John Sempa who aided her in her long journey. Viewing will be held on Monday, 4 to 7 pm at the Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 262 Railroad Avenue, West Scranton 18505-1041. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday morning at 9:30 at Holy Rosary Church, 12 Stephenson Street, Duryea. Followed by interment in St. Catherine’s Cemetery Mausoleum, Moscow. Viewing will be held on Monday, 4 to 7 pm at the Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 262 Railroad Avenue, West Scranton 18505.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday morning at 9:30 at Holy Rosary Church, 12 Stephenson Street, Duryea.

Followed by interment in St. Catherine’s Cemetery Mausoleum, Moscow.
