Katie Esposito, 54, of West Scranton, passed away peacefully on Saturday night, surrounded by those that loved her the most, after a courageous battle with cancer. Her husband of 29 years, and best friend of 40 years, is Michael A. Esposito III.

Born in Scranton, Katie was the daughter of Carol (McCarthy) and the late Frank O’Connor. A graduate of Bishop Hannon High School, Katie was employed by the Scranton Times for a number of years before embracing the role that defined her life: being an extraordinary mother to her children. Her family was her life, and she loved them with all of her heart.

Most recently, she and her husband were the former owner/operators of Taco Bandido in West Scranton, where she was the heart of the business, keeping the restaurant alive after her father-in-law had passed away. Because of her dedication, it continued to thrive for many years. She loved spending her evenings with her mom and daughter, watching her favorite shows and movies. The care that both of them, along with her husband, gave her over the past few months is what kept her going, even on the hard days. She also loved visiting her son at East Stroudsburg University to watch him in the marching band, at concerts and theatre performances. Katie loved online shopping, her daily ice cream deliveries from her mom, and getting her nails done by her daughter. Prior to her diagnosis, she looked forward to spending every Wednesday with her mom and nephew, Elias, who she spoiled and loved like her own children.

Above all, Katie was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She is survived by her husband, Michael A. Esposito III and her children: Marianna Benke (Russell), Olyphant, and Michael A. Esposito IV, Scranton. She is also survived by her mother, Carol O’Connor (Taylor) and siblings: Patrick O’Connor, Scranton, Timothy O’Connor, Taylor and Bridget Chomko (Andy), Scranton. Katie also leaves behind three beloved nephews: Tyler, Devon and Elias, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and countless friends. Katie was predeceased by her father, Frank O’Connor, and father-in-law, Michael A. “Taco” Esposito II.

Katie’s determination and courage were a true testament to her fighting Irish spirit, evident not only in the everyday moments of her life but also in the battle she waged against cancer. Her resilience and optimism remind us that even in the face of life’s greatest challenges, the strength of one’s spirit can shine through.

Her family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all of the wonderful medical staff who aided in her care over the past 18 months: Memorial Sloane Kettering, the 7th floor nursing staff at Geisinger CMC, Greenridge Care Center and Hospice of The Sacred Heart. They also wish to thank everyone who came to her benefit, sent donations, cards and care packages during her hard-fought battle.
