Eugene (Gene) Martin Saravitz, Sr., 91, a long-time resident of Taylor, PA, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2025. Eugene was born in Scranton on February 7, 1934, the son of the late Martin and Stella (ne Lasinski) Saravitz. He was married to Lillian A. Saravitz (ne Simms) for nearly 49 years before she passed away from ALS in 2007.
Eugene grew up on Cayuga Street in North Scranton. He graduated from Scranton Technical High School in 1951 before joining the United States Army. He was a proud Korean War veteran serving in the Army Security Agency. Some of his fondest memories of his years in the Army were when he was at Kagnew Station near the city of Asmara in the Ethiopian Empire (now Asmara, Eritrea). During his time at Kagnew Station, he enjoyed many hunting trips with his comrades. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1956, having achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant.
He was employed by the Bell Telephone Company and its successor entities for over thirty years until his retirement. He also attended the University of Scranton while working at Bell Telephone. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed fishing from his boat on the Susquehanna River near Tunkhannock. He was a founding member of the North Scranton Sportsman Club and made annual trips during deer hunting season to the clubs cabin on the top of a mountain near Towanda.
In addition to his wife and parents, Eugene was predeceased by his sister Geraldine Cushing. He is survived by his two sons, Eugene M. Saravitz Jr., M.D., and wife, Mary, Easton; and David M. Saravitz, Ph.D., attorney-at-law, and wife, Carole H. Saravitz, Ph.D., Raleigh, NC; four grandchildren, Schae, Pittsburgh, and Ethan, Los Angeles, CA, Krystyna, New York, NY, and Andrea, Raleigh, NC; four step grandchildren, Lindsay, Colleen, Rush, and Michael; and six step great grandchildren, Noah, Rush, Valencia, Ignacio, Reagan Gray, and Hudson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on April 12, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at Divine Mercy Parish, 312 Davis St., Scranton, PA, followed by interment at Cathedral Cemetery. Prior to the mass, the family will receive mourners at the church beginning at 9:00 a.m.
