Eugene E. Wassell, 66, of South Scranton, passed away on Sunday night in Geisinger/CMC from a recurrence of cancer. His wife of 41 years is Patricia (Pat) Melisky Wassell. Born in Scranton to the late George and Julia Fezuk Wassell, Gene was educated in Scranton Schools. Known as “The Gravedigger” Gene operated a cemetery care and digging service along with the help of his wife Pat and nephew Robert. Gene was a character. Known for his witty comments, nicknames, and crazy costumes or shorts. No one knew what they were in for when they saw him coming. He loved his daughters Patricia Jenkins and Gina Wassell, and the men they chose Chadd Jenkins and Brian Houser, all of Scranton, more than anyone can possibly imagine. He loved and held an unbelievable lifelong bond with his nephew Robert Evans, Scranton, who was more of a son to him. He loved and cherished being Pop-pop to his granddaughter Ramona. He also leaves behind two sisters, Julia Evans and Elizabeth Jones, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Joseph Wassell and one sister, Mary Ann Jones. A celebration of life will be held at a later date when all can gather with us to pay tribute, share stories, and laugh about the life of a man who always had a story to tell. Arrangements have been entrusted to the direction and care of the Edward J Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services
