George Gula, 91, formerly of the Bellevue section of West Scranton, died peacefully on Thursday at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village, Lewisburg. He was the loving husband of the late Mary Jane Bayda Gula who passed away in June of 2014. Born in Taylor, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Anna Holgash Gula. George was a former member of St. George’s Orthodox Church, Taylor and St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, West Scranton. He was a United States Army Veteran of WW II, a member of American Legion Post 920, St. Michael’s Brotherhood, Free & Accepted Masons, Lodge 579, Taylor, and retired from the United States Postal Service after 39 years. He is survived by a daughter, Karen Wiesen, Danville and husband Arthur Wiesen Jr., St. Louis, Mo., two sons, George W. Gula and wife Fonda, Pittsburgh, Ken Gula and wife Leeanna, Allentown, six grandchildren, Arthur III and Rachel Wiesen, Larissa, Nicholas, Kenneth Jr., Veronica Gula,, one brother, Nicholas Gula and wife Lorraine, Raleigh, NC, nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by siblings, Joseph Gula, Mary LaBar and Margaret Mroczka. Funeral services will begin on Thursday morning at 10:15 from the Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 262 Railroad Avenue, West Scranton, with a Funeral Requiem Service at 11 am in St Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, West Scranton, celebrated by the Rev. Philip Harendza, Pastor. Interment will follow in St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery, Taylor with full military honors. Viewing for family and friends will be on Wednesday, 5 to 8 pm.
