Harold J. Newell

Harold J. Newell, 79, of Clarks Green, formerly of Scranton, passed Saturday morning at home, with his family by his side. His wife of 56 years is Judy Merrick Newell. Born and raised in the Bellevue section of West Scranton, he was the son of the late Harold and Catherine (Kelly) Newell. Harold was a 1962 graduate of West Scranton High School and attended Penn State and Purdue University. He was formerly employed by Power Engineering, Honeywell and Scranton Electric Construction Company. He was a former member and instructor trainer coordinator for the Pipe fitters and plumbers Local Union 524. In 1987,Harold opened Scranton Electric Heating and Cooling Services and served as President for the past 37 years. He served for six years with the HHC, 1st Regiment of the 109th Infantry, attaining the rank of Spec/5. Harold loved to spend time with his family, especially summers at Lake Winola for the past 52 years. He will be deeply missed by his family. He is survived by his wife Judy, son Harold (Jennifer Williams), daughters, Colleen Leonard (Ned), Amy Hill (Tom),Kathleen Haikes (David) and 7 grandchildren: Christopher Newell, Elizabeth & David Haikes, Thomas, Catherine and Anna Hill and Nora Leonard. He was preceded in death by a son, Matthew and brother, Joseph Newell. The family would like to thank Dr. Weinberger, Dr. Liptok, Traditional Home Health & Hospice and Donna Maass-Borick and her team of nurses for their care and support.

A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, June 6, 2024, by Reverend John Doris at 10:00 AM in St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, 322 Chestnut Street, Dunmore, Pa 18512. Burial will follow at Cathedral Cemetery Mausoleum. Military Honors will be accorded by the Dickson City Veterans Honor Guard. Friends may call on Wednesday, June 5 from 4:00 -8:00 PM at the Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 262 Railroad Avenue, West Scranton PA. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Joseph’s Center, 2010 Adams Avenue, Scranton, Pa 18509.
