Helen Sawka RN, 95, a resident of Keyser Valley, died Monday at home. Her husband John Sawka, died April 6, 1997. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late George and Julia Malnick Koznowsky. A 1939 graduate of Scranton Technical High School and the Scranton State Hospital School of Nursing, she was a member of St. Vladimir Ukrainian Catholic Church, St. Vladimir Blessed Virgin Mary Guild, and the church pierogi making team. Until retirement, Helen was a Registered Nurse at the Scranton State General Hospital, working as an ER nurse and a Nursing Supervisor. Helen was a loving wife, mother, gramma and great gramma, sister and a friend to many. On every holiday, she prepared her special dinners for her family and also enjoyed traveling with her husband John and was an excellent seamstress, as well as being the family caregiver. She is survived by two sons, Gregory Sawka and wife Judy, Scranton, Michael Sawka, Clarks Summit, one daughter, Susan Sakson and husband John, Peckville, five grandchildren, Julie Sawka, Gregory Sawka and wife Bridget, Stephen Sawka, John Sakson Jr. and Sarah Sakson, four great grandchildren, Connor, Blake, Lucy and Lila Sawka, nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by 10 siblings, Anna Takacs, Jule Buchalla, Olga Mallick, Irene Kornutiak, Mary Brayer, John, Andrew, Steven, two infants George II and George III Koznowsky. A special thank you to Dr. Kurt Moran for his loving and compassionate care to our Mom. A Funeral Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 am in St. Vladimir Ukrainian Catholic Church, 430 N. 7th Avenue, Scranton, by the Rev. Fr. Myron Myronyuk, Pastor. Interment will follow in Abington Hills Cemetery. Viewing for family and friends will be on Friday 5 to 8 pm, with Rosary Recital at 7:30 pm in the Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 262 Railroad Avenue, West Scranton
