Helen M. Sporko, 87, of Scranton, passed away on Friday at the Regional Hospital of Scranton. Helen was the widow of the late Joseph P. Sporko who died in 1990. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Mary Anna Kosek Manka. She was a lifelong member of SS Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church and a 1945 class valedictorian at West Scranton High School. She was also a Charter Member of the VFW Post 6528 Ladies Auxilliary. Before her retirement, Helen worked for International Correspondence School and Darmofal Candy for many years. Her family was the center of her life and she was happiest spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was also a huge Penn State fan and could be found on fall Saturday’s, watching or listening to her Nittany Lions on her transistor radio. Helen also enjoyed working in her flower garden, reading novels and participating in the Sloan Seniors. Surviving are two daughters, Elaine Sporko, with whom she resided for many years, Carol A. Dupras and husband Michael, Mays Landing, NJ, one son, Joseph G. Sporko and wife Susan, Saratoga Springs, NY, four grandchildren, Tara and Kaleigh Sporko and Charles and Amanda Dupras, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Helen was predeceased by her siblings, Tessy, Walter, Henry Kate and Casimir, who was KIA in WW II. The family would like to thank the Jewish Home of Eastern PA and the I.C.U. staff at Regional Hospital of Scranton for the care and comfort provided to Mom during this difficult time. Her funeral will be on Wednesday, from the Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 262 Railroad Avenue, West Scranton, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am in SS Peter & Paul Church, Interment will follow in the parish Cemetery. Viewing for family and friends will be on Tuesday, 4 to 7 pm.
