John J. Szymanski

John J. Szymanski, 87, of Archbald, passed Wednesday at Hospice of The Sacred Heart, Dunmore. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Frank and Helen Lewicki Szymanski. John was a member and usher of St. Patrick’s Parish, West Scranton, a graduate of West Scranton High School, Lackawanna College and Wilkes University. He was an accountant and was the Sheriff of Lackawanna County for 32 years, prior to retirement.

He is survived by two sons, John J. Szymanski Jr. and wife Rita, North Carolina, Mark Szymanski, MD and wife Kristen, Clarks Summit, daughter Kristin Meyers and husband John, Bear Creek, seven grandchildren, Ben, Lee, Mark Jr., Kelly, Claire, Taylor Szymanski and Kyle Meyers, one great grandchild, Reece Szymanski, his companion, Gloria Marta, one sister, Ann Marie Evarts and husband Peter, Taylor, two nephews and one niece. He was predeceased by his parents, a sister, Eleanore Trapp, an infant brother, Francis, a nephew Edward Trapp and brother in-law, Raymond Trapp.

The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 am on Wednesday, June 12th at St. Patrick’s Church, 1403 Jackson Street, Scranton, 18504, immediately followed by a Mass of Christian Burial and interment at Sacred Hearts Cemetery, Scranton. The Lackawanna County Sheriff’s Department will provide an Honor Guard.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services, West Scranton. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Hospice of The Sacred Heart, E.D. Preate Drive, Suite 108 Moosic, PA 18507

Burial Date: June 12, 2024

The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 am on Wednesday, June 12th at St. Patrick’s Church, 1403 Jackson Street, Scranton, 18504, immediately followed by a Mass of Christian Burial and interment at Sacred Hearts Cemetery, Scranton.

The Lackawanna County Sheriff’s Department will provide an Honor Guard.
