Mary Jane Judge, 68, of Orlando, FL, formerly of West Scranton, died July 15, 2018 in Florida after a long bout with cancer. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Judge and Julia Griguts Judge Mitchell. Mary Jane attended St. Michael’s R. C. Elementary School, Scranton, was a 1967 graduate of West Scranton High School, Marywood College and was a R.N.; working within the Sisters of Jesus Crucified Community and St. Mary’s Villa, Elmhurst. Mary Jane retired as a nun and moved to Florida to be closer to her family. Her family; Religious Life; Faith; Sisters of her Order and the I.H.M Order and close friends, were the center of her life.
Mary Jane was a member of the former St. Michael’s Lithuanian Roman Catholic Church on Jackson Street in West Scranton, and received all of her Sacraments there. Throughout her college years and during her Novice as well as after taking her vows as a nun, she could be seen traveling all through the streets of Scranton, dressed in her habit, on her Vespa scooter and was notably marked as the “Flying Nun”. She is survived by her brother, Joseph Judge and wife Judy, her niece, Erin Carris and husband Jacob, three grandnephews, Rhett, Archer and Calvin Carris, multiple cousins and extended family throughout the Scranton area as well as her many close friends within the religious and layman communities. A Eucharistic Celebration Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, by Msgr. Peter P. Madus at 11 am, in St. Eulalias Church, 214 Blue Shutters Road, Elmhurst, 18444. Burial of her remains will follow in St. Mary’s Villa Cemetery, Elmhurst. Arrangements under the care and direction of her cousin, Edward J. Chomko Sr., at the Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services, West Scranton.
