Sally M. Yevitz, 84, of Scranton, died Sunday, peacefully at Hospice of the Sacred Heart Dunmore with her family at her side. Her husband of 52 years is Nicholas W. Yevitz. Born in Pittston, she was the daughter of the late John and Catherine Grohowski Walenista. Due to her fathers job with PP&L, she attended schools throughout Pennsylvania and graduated near the top of her class at Carlisle High School. At high school, she was a member of the softball and basketball teams and was a majorette from 2nd grade till she graduated from Carlisle High School. Prior to retiring, she was a customer service representative at Nat West and had been the head cashier with F.W. Woolworth, a buyer and consultant at a local bridal store and a department manager at Sears. A devoted mother, Sally took an eight year sabbatical to be a full-time mother to her two children. Always willing to help others, she was a volunteer for the Grand Opening at Steamtown National Historical Park and United Way Volunteer Day. She was a committee member of the United Way Penny Patrol and also manned phones for WVIA-TV membership campaigns. She was president of the Audubon School PTA for two years, vice president for the East Scranton Intermediate School PTA, and president of the East Scranton School PTA for two years. In addition, she helped to establish, and was elected first president of the Scranton High School Cross Country Parents Club. In keeping with her commitment to her children, she was a Cub Scout den mother, Boy Scout and Girl Scout committee person. Sally was the first woman to complete the Scout Leadership Development Program with the Forest Lake Council, Boy Scouts of America at the Goose Pond Boy Scout Camp. Sally was also a costume designer for the Ballet Theater of Scranton. She joined St. John’s Byzantine Catholic Church when she married Nick and became very active in church affairs. She was a catechism instructor for several years and president of the St. Elizabeth Guild for ten years. In addition, she was in charge of the kitchen, preparing food for the annual church picnic and helped to run the poker game. A long time follower of the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles, she could often be seen at the Lackawanna Stadium, rooting for the home team, The Red Barons and now the Rail Riders. Due to her background in school sports, she would spend hours working with her children and grandchildren in learning the basics of basketball, baseball and softball. Sally was instrumental in Pocono Downs receiving their racing license and hand delivered the racing application to Harrisburg. With her parents, she traveled to various horse racing tracks in Pennsylvania, New York and Ohio to race their horses. In addition to her husband Nick, she is survived by their son Nicholas and his children, Abigail and Ryan, their daughter Kimberly Piersimoni and husband Joseph and their twin sons, Mario and Tino, a sister, Patricia Walenista, Richmond, Virginia, nieces and nephews. A Con Celebrated Funeral Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 am, by the Rev. Leonard A. Martin, S.J., Pastor at St. John’s Byzantine Catholic Church, 310 Broadway Street, Scranton, and Rev. Robert Lozinski CSC,. Entombment will follow in St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Viewing for family and friends will be on Friday, 5 to 8:00 pm. Parastas service will be at 7:30 pm officiated by the Rev. Robert Lozinski, in the Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 262 Railroad Avenue, West Scranton. Those attending the Funeral Liturgy on Saturday, are asked to go directly to the church.
