SFD LT Kelly P. Hopkins, 63, of South Scranton, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning at home, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born in Scranton, Kelly was the son of the late Vincent and Pauline Kelly Hopkins. A proud graduate of Scranton Technical High School, he was a former member of Nativity Parish and attended the Cathedral of St. Peter.
Kelly dedicated nearly 40 years of his life to serving his community as a firefighter with the Scranton Fire Department, from January 6, 1986, until passing on March 16, 2025. He was known as a “fireman’s fireman”—the kind of firefighter who led by example, worked tirelessly, and put the job and his brothers and sisters in the fire service before himself. His work ethic was second to none—he was always willing to cover shifts, including on holidays, ensuring his fellow firefighters could be home with their families. His selflessness, dedication, and unwavering loyalty made him a pillar of the Scranton Fire Department and a beloved member of the community.
Outside of work, Kelly embraced life with the same passion he brought to the firehouse. If the weather was nice, you could often find him making his rounds in the area in his Corvette or playing 18 holes with his closest friends. He cherished these moments, as they were a reflection of his love for camaraderie and simply enjoying life to the fullest.
Kelly’s generosity knew no bounds. If there was ever a donation bucket in sight, he was the first to contribute, and if he noticed someone struggling, he would offer money or the shirt on his back without hesitation. Whether it was a friend in need or a stranger down on their luck, Kelly believed in helping others without expecting anything in return because it doesn’t cost anything to be nice. His kindness and willingness to give were just as much a part of his legacy as his service to the community.
Beyond his career, Kelly was a proud member of many organizations, most notably the Local #60 IAFF, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Black Sheep of West Scranton, the American Ukrainian Veterans Association of Lackawanna County, and the Waldorf Park German American Federation, where he continued his father’s reign as shuffleboard champion. Whether it was his service to the community or his camaraderie with friends, Kelly embodied loyalty, generosity, and an infectious spirit that left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Above all, Kelly was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He is survived by the mother of his children: Mary Lynn Hopkins and his children: U.S. Navy Lt. Commander Timothy P. Hopkins and wife Brittany Hopkins, Katie Hopkins, Jennelle Hopkins, and Amanda Hopkins and husband Matthew Hinderliter, all of Scranton. He was a proud grandfather to Emma, Gianni, Gulianna, and Baylee.
He is also survived by his siblings: Paula Lavelle (John) of North Carolina, Mary Ellen Morgan (Gerard) of Scranton, Kathy Bonk (James) of Minnesota, Eileen Masters (Patrick) of Scranton, Thomas Hopkins of Scranton, his twin brother Terrence Hopkins of Scranton, Michael Hopkins (Laura) of Scranton, and Chris Hopkins (Terri) of Philadelphia. Kelly leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and countless friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Kelly’s legacy of dedication, kindness, and sacrifice will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. His family finds comfort in knowing that he has been reunited with those who passed before him, and his spirit will continue to watch over the city he served so faithfully.
